EXPERIENCE
After my junior year at Duke University, I had the honor of serving as an intern in the Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton. While this experience took place decades ago and I answered plenty of telephone calls, the experience is relevant because it gave me a clear image of a woman who could wait as the White House Operator prepared to connect her call with the President while she simultaneously wrote a speech to deliver on the floor of Congress, tracked a constituent complaint, and finalized handouts for her local neighborhood association meeting. This is the level of service I seek to bring to Prince George’s County residents.
After Duke, I attended the University of Maryland Law School where I earned clerkships with DLA Piper and DeCaro, Doran. I clerked for Judges William Quarles (then on the Circuit Court of Maryland, he is now sits on the Unites States District Court) and Donna Hill Staton upon graduation from law school.
The trial experience I gained as a full time law clerk left me with a passion to try cases. Hence, I sought and earned a job as an assistant state’s attorney with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office. In fact, I started as the first full time domestic violence attorney in the office. As a prosecutor, I successfully tried all sorts of cases starting with misdemeanor offenses in the district court up to the most complex and heinous felony offenses in the circuit court.
In an effort to round out my experience and to utilize my public policy degree, I transitioned into County government as education liason to the County Executive. I chose to accept this responsibility because of my passion for education and because I know educating our children is not an easy task. I like the tough assignments.
Next, I was appointed as Executive Director of the Prince George’s County Revenue Authority. This is an agency with 75 employees a budget of $11 million and assets of $28 million.
When I started as Executive Director of the Prince George’s County Revenue Authority, I inherited an annual audit that found double digit deficiencies. Through more engaged management controls and meaningful policy changes, I am proud to report to the citizens of Prince George’s County that the latest audit (fiscal year 2009) had zero deficiencies. Prince George’s County dollars are well managed at the Revenue Authority under my leadership.
I have enjoyed serving Prince Georgians from every corner of our County and from all walks of life as Executive Director of the Prince George’s County Revenue Authority. It is humbling and enlightening service.
With formal public policy training and experience as an effective prosecutor and administrator, I respectfully submit myself for service as Prince George’s County State’s Attorney. |
